East Bridgewater kept a genuine town center instead: the Common, laid out in 1721, anchors a National Register historic district where the oldest houses date to 1703 and the First Parish Church has stood since 1794. Town offices still operate out of the 1850s Italianate Hobart estate house. The town reads as small because it functions that way — most housing sits on wooded residential streets off the two state routes, not in subdivisions stacked against a highway interchange.
